The Peace of Wild Things Wendell Berry When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

“It was two years ago today, on that icy january morning—my car accident. one minute i’m driving—and the next—my life flashes before my eyes. The road had felt safe, I had a smile on my face. i’m still not sure what happened. was there black ice on that curve? was it the unassuming inch or two of slush on the road? who knows? but i’ve never felt so helpless. i constantly struggle to recall things; of course this is the exception. it’s funny how that works. the pure terror isn’t easy to forget, i’ve tried. my own screams get stuck in my head. i begged and pleaded with siri to call 911. it didn’t work. i managed to walk away with nothing more than a black eye. i still don’t understand it. my world felt just about as shattered as my windshield. yet my bruise healed in a few weeks. my friends were so kind and lovely. but my bruise healed and it felt like they forgot. i’m certain they didn’t—they just moved on, because i had made it out okay. i don’t blame them one bit. i don’t. thank god, right? but it feels lonely to live in fear. my entire life feels different. “

“i know i am lucky, so so lucky. not everyone makes it out okay. but why does it feel so raw two years later? i am tired. living with so much fear in your body means nowhere feels safe. nowhere feels like home. a peaceful drive is not real. there is no peace. the inner chaos is all-consuming. i am so tired. car accidents happen every single day. i tell my fear to shrink itself down and be small, like everyone else’s is. it doesn’t hear me.”
