This week, we had the honour of hosting Prof. Marcos Centeno! During his time at UHGS he gave a lecture on “Visual Memory, Erasure, and the Afterlives of Images from Hiroshima’s Peace Museum” as well as led an internal seminar. We are grateful for the discussions his visit inspired.

We are very excited to announce that our colleague Dr. Savina Sirik received Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council) research grant for her project titled: “Navigating Complexity: Intergenerational Memories of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia”!

We were honoured to host Dr. Hiroshi Maruyama, founder of Centre for Environmental and Indigenous Policy Studies & Professor Emeritus, Muroran Institute of Technology. Yesterday, Dr. Maruyama shared powerful insights on Indigenous rights, decolonization & the role of research in advancing justice.

In recent years, several PhD dissertations have explored the Holocaust and its aftermath in Sweden. One standout: "Afterlives" by Victoria Van Orden Martínez (Linköping Univ, 2023).

Our researcher Tadek Markiewicz recently took part in the British International Studies Association’s 50th Anniversary Conference in Belfast. He presented on “Global Vulnerabilities and Challenges to Orders” and convened two panels: “The Many Faces of Security” and “Cultures of Representation.”

Last week, the UHGS took part in #Almedalsveckan in Visby, as part of Uppsala University's program. Prof. Tomislav Dulić spoke on "The Gaza Genocide Case: Between International Law and Politics."

The dissertation was successfully defended at the Department of Government, Uppsala University. Congratulations to Dr. Jeglińska on this important achievement!

Last Thursday, our lecturer Roland Kostić served as a member of the grading committee for Anna Jeglińska’s PhD thesis “Co-nationals under construction: Poland’s diaspora policy 1989–2023.”

This workshop will convene distinguished scholars from the UK, as well as Western and Southeastern Europe, fostering collaboration and academic exchange in this vital field.

Our colleague, Dr. Goran Miljan, will participate in a workshop dedicated to establishing a transnational partnership network in Jewish and Holocaust studies. The event, scheduled to take place in Belgrade from 16 to 19 June 2025, is organised by the Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway.
