I spent my first two years as an Oracle DBA reading those huge-ass Oracle manuals b/c there was so much to learn. And that was with 8.1.7.2.3. There's a shit-ton more to learn these days, and I haven't found any LLM that can answer specific Qs accurately to difficult recovery situations.

Aaaaaand this is why I manage most of our own financials, with the exception of annual tax filings. I don't need an "advisor" - there's plenty of great advice out there (e.g. Morningstar) on how to handle investments. You made the right decision!

You know how COBOL devs made stupid money in the late 90's patching stuff for Y2K?

Anybody who "kinda knows how computers work" is gonna do the same 20 years from now, and then our understanding of IT will collapse as a society, buried under unfathomable complexity that doesn't work well at all.

The upside to all these companies replacing junior engineers with AI is that cybersecurity will remain a growth industry for at least another decade.

Of course, whatever +did+ get written down in those run books and binders was essentially useless to them ... because the real work of IT is learning what the user REALLY needs and how to deliver it within budget and on time.

If this feels like the rush to Agentic AI ... it should. 😇

These devs also had difficulty understanding exactly what we did because often, they'd been thrown into the deep end of the pool with little knowledge of how US / EU businesses actually +worked+ ... because they were essentially freshers just out of college.

We'd spend hours, days, weeks writing down in plain business English what we did with our systems, how they worked, what to do in case of particular situations within the business cycle, usually being interviewed by devs so young they still couldn't spell COBOL, FOCUS, or VSAM.

Suddenly, senior folks were being "rebadged" and had to reapply for the same jobs they'd been doing and would continue to do.

But first ... the knowledge transfer (K/T) process.

All of this "AI will replace junior devs" feels remarkably like the early 2000s post-Y2K, when major IT shops suddenly found reasons to offshore / outsource development to Infosys, CSC, TCS, and other "consulting" firms b/c dev costs had increased dramatically.
