I want to encourage people to view the past as not just a clipshow of the best and worst of times to be either recreated or disowned, but a toolbox to build a better life with with your friends and peers. We can only go forward. /🧡

I would rather not see the eugenicist and sexist ideas of the late 19th and early 20th century be revived in the 21st, but yknow what I would like to see come back? Unions. And spending wealth on public spaces like museums, recreation spaces, and performance venues. And public transit.

We can also deconstruct the violent colonialism and workplace health and safety nightmare of life before the 20th century while acknowledging that they had a point about slow fashion and minimising household waste.

One of the things I love most about history, from the distant past to ~20 years recent, is that we can interact with it in a way that enriches our present. We can simultaneously deconstruct harmful 2000s brainrot while also reviving the eras ideas about tech that would make our lives better today.

I had the most fun of my life as a kid in the 2000s, even though I was also exposed to stuff i really shouldnt have at that age. Luckily, so did a lot of other folks, and if we can bond over reality tv, flash games, and aesthetics, we might just have a shot at healing as a community.

And not despite of, but because of that insane mood whiplash of it being such an optimistic time as well as kind of a cesspit of sleaze, I feel like I'm able to face the current era with more nuance and resilience.

I also love that nostalgia can be more than just a way to numb the pain of living through current events. The 2000s, famously, was not a very nice decade to live through. Not politically, not culturally. Talking about it feels like group therapy at times. Its not all blingeez and frutiger aero.

19.03.2025 10:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And more than that, I'm extremely excited to hear what other people who experienced the 2000s as kids, teens, young adults, have to say. I love hearing about how other people around the world experienced that one decade we all lived through. I get why the older millennials cant shut up now.

I was actually sentient for the 2000s, and while I was a child during the y2k/mcbling era thats so in vogue now, I feel like an actual participant in that cultural converstation instead of just a bystander whose birth year happens to start with a 19. And i'm surprised by how much I have to say!

19.03.2025 10:28 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Especially after coming of age in the 2010s, where, famously, NOBODY WOULD SHUT UP about the 90s. (No hate to the 90s, I was born in that decade. But i was born in '96. I was barely sentient for the new millennium, I just cannot be nostalgic in the same way older millennials are.)

I'm also thankful to be in a position where i'm able to reflect on those shows in a nuanced way. The yikes stuff was there, but so was the iconically campy, silly stuff. I feel really excited about the cultural conversation turning to 2000s nostalgia.

I don't blame my family for letting me watch those shows, though. I'm glad that i'm lucky enough to have a very supportive feminist family who encouraged me to thrive and deconstruct those norms as i grew and also did so themselves. We all got exposed to the brain rot.

It really speaks to the culture of the time that basically openly bullying any woman who didnt 100% conform to such an extremely narrow kind of fashionable femininity was so de rigeur. It feels like the psychological successor to widespread lead exposure from petrol and paint in the 50's-70's.

Back on track, its been really interesting to reflect on these shows, 20 years later. ANTM and WNTW are both shows I remember watching with my parents between the ages of like... eight and twelve. All mixed in with totally spies, bratz, winx club, and other 2000s girly TV favourites.

First of all, just gonna hype up Luxeria really quickly. Watching her reactions and retrospectives on 2000s beauty and style reality shows has been like watching trashy TV with your cool stylish feminist older sister. Vibes are immaculate. Especially when Mr Biscuit makes a cameo.

19.03.2025 10:00 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I've been watching a lot of Luxeria's content on shows like ANTM and What Not to Wear while i go about my business, and its been really interesting to revisit. I grew up in HK with a lot of international TV, so i've been very familiar with both shows from a young age. 🧡

This show has a lightning in a bottle amount of personality and silliness and audacity and the fact that its free to watch on TUBI is a sign that theres still some good in the world. It is one of the greatest shows of the McBling era and if it ever becomes lost media im lighting something on fire.

I'm also so happy that the rest of the show's cast are also fun to watch. Goldie, Hoopz, and Red Oyster are fantastic. Hottie was also an incredible presence. The audacity. The delusion. The bike bell sound effect they insert whenever she blinks. THE RAW CHICKEN DONE IN THE MICROWAVE.

I have literally nothing bad to say about New York. She is one of the all time great reality TV characters, her career is now in its 20th year, she's still absolutely electric, and I cant wait to watch her other shows, especially house of villains.

16.03.2025 02:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I largely started watching, though, for New York. Tiffany "New York" Pollard might just be the funniest woman alive. She's quoted constantly by my favourite drag queens, I've seen her face in a thousand reaction images, heard her on just as many tiktok audios, most of them from this show.

Despite my complaints, Flav is just so fun to watch. I feel like I'm watching a reality tv dating show about someone's comic relief DnD bard. His wardrobe is like an endless child's dress up trunk, and because he's a small guy, the clothes are wearing him and its amazing.

16.03.2025 02:31 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

THAT BEING SAID... oh my fucking god i love this show. I get why OTHER PEOPLE love this show. Its so fun and so funny and so campy and I see why its still a fountain of memes twenty years later. Things about it live in my head rent free.

16.03.2025 02:26 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Hoopz' mum had more chemistry with Flav than anyone else on the first season did, and i think its because they were probably closer in age. I also feel a bit sad that the plot is just women tearing each other up over the affections of one guy, like thats the most important thing in life.
