San Diego's beaches are bouncing back after El Niño Scripps researchers say it's good news about the health and resilience of our coasts.

Two new studies from researchers at Scripps Oceanography found that San Diego County beaches gained width in the past year, and that average beach width across all of California has remained stable since 1985.

Thanks to NSF support and a partnership between UPR and Scripps, thousands of specimens were saved, conserved and integrated into a world-class research collection, fueling discoveries in evolution, biogeography, and conservation. 🔬

California Beach Widths Show Resilience Two new studies from researchers at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography provide encouraging news about California's beaches at both local and statewide scales.

🛰️ A companion study funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California State Parks and the Office of Naval Research used satellite imagery to reveal that California's average beach width has remained remarkably stable across nearly four decades.

🌊 Last year, most beaches in @sandiegocounty.bsky.social increased in width after multiple years of shrinking, according to the 2025 San Diego County Beach Report. These findings point to the start of what researchers expect to be a recovery period.
