Seismic evidence for oceanic plate delamination offshore Southwest Iberia - Nature Geoscience The lithospheric mantle may be delaminating from the crust in an oceanic plate segment offshore Southwest Iberia, which could be the ultimate cause of the 1755 Great Lisbon Earthquake, according to seismic imaging and numerical simulations.

New in @nature.com: research led by @idlearth.bsky.social's @joaocduarte.bsky.social shows the ocean floor off Portugal is peeling away into the mantle.

This rare process may explain the 1755 Lisbon M8.7 quake and could mark the initiation of a new subduction zone.

⚒️ 🧪 Were you one of the tens of thousands in the Bay Area woken up by the M4.3 earthquake last night? The earthquake occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs along the east side of the valley.

Do ponto de vista tectónico, esta zona é caracterizada pela convergência entre duas placas tectónicas, o que gera o desenvolvimento da cadeia de montanhas dos Himalais, do Planalto do Tibete e de um conjunto de outras cadeias montanhosas junto à fronteira entre o Afeganistão e o Paquistão.

Sismo de magnitude 6 no Afeganistão, junto à fronteira com o Paquistão, 200 quilómetros a norte da fronteira entre as placas indiana e euroasiática. O sismo ocorreu a cerca de 8 km de profundidade e teve uma intensidade de VII. Estão confirmadas mais de 600 mortes.
