And of course that requires allowing automation to eliminate jobs while not making people poor--e.g. by as a wealthier society implementing UBI so that people can still live comfortably while spending their time on things they value more than their jobs.

Jobs (i.e. things people have to do because they need money) are bad, but vocations (i.e. things that take work but that people want to do because they find it meaningful and/or enjoyable) are good. What we should work towards with automation is to reduce or eliminate jobs, but increase vocations.

A substantial portion of the federal govt is meaningfully academic—things like BLS, NOAA, NASA, NSF, NIH. (Tiny compared to Social Security, Medicare, and military, ofc, but objectively substantial.) WRT those civil servants, the academic freedom analogy is close to 1:1.

I find myself uncertain about this. In particular, abolish ICE and CBP and replace them with responsible law-enforcement agencies needs to be the solution. On the other hand, that basically can't be done successfully under Trump-and I suspect that abolish without replacement is a nonstarter. [1/3]
