Two problems with scientific conferences

Do we outsource research conferences at our peril? Forβprofit event firms reduce our effort, but fees are high and returns to academia low. Would not-for-profit society-organized meetings held at universities benefit the academic community more? peeer.net/2025/08/04/t...

Experts fear the leafy seadragon may be disappearing from areas hit by SAβs toxic algal bloom. With a limited range, losing local populations could mean losing the species entirely. Urgent action is needed to prevent permanent biodiversity loss.

Speed mentoring for early career ecologists
Calling all early career ecologists!
The ESA Mentoring Program supports Early Career Ecologists by connecting them with mentors from academia and industry. The program provides a space to explore topics such as career development, work-life balance, research pathways, and navigating challenges in the profession.
When you register as a mentee, you will be invited to browse the profiles of our registered mentors and enjoy a unique opportunity to book up to three 30-minute sessions.
Mentee registration for the July week is now OPEN
A few things to note:
If youβve been part of the ESA Mentoring Program before β or been mentored elsewhere β youβre still welcome to apply.
Mentees must be current ESA members to participate.
Sessions will be held online (Zoom)
There is no ongoing commitment β mentors and mentees may choose to continue the conversation after the mentoring week, but there is no expectation to do so.
If July doesnβt suit, look out for the October round (registrations open in September).
