The distillation technique emerged in a 2015 paper by Google AI experts Jeff Dean and Geoffrey Hinton, and DeepMind's vice president, Oriol Vinyals.

Vinyals noted the paper was rejected by NeurIPS for lacking impact. Ten years later, distillation is a key topic in AI.

This has sparked parts of the AI ecosystem and chilled others.

Distillation, an old concept gaining new significance, is good news for most, complicated for a few, and important for AI's future.
