This was the era when I was clearing all the permissions for California Poetry, a chaotic process indeed (poets!), and that's how I met Jack Hicks, of whom I was very fond. He had really great stories. And he introduced me to the professor who would become my grad advisor at Davis.

The PRHC! Malcolm and I went to a California Studies Assn conference at Davis hosted by the PRHC. It was memorable for me at 22, listening to people talk and plan and be enthusiastic about this place and community, and being treated as someone who had things to say in return.

Even if you missed the event last week, it's not too late to pick up a copy of Tami Parr's "Goats in America." π
"The book . . . is information dense, so much so that the weight of information would be difficult to digest were it not that Parrβs writing style is so crisp and conversational."

A damn shame. I've always admired TUP's excellent environmental literature books, among their many other fine titles.

The Almeda Fire burned through Bear Creek. Now native plants are taking hold
The Almeda Fire turned the Bear Creek Greenway between Ashland and Phoenix into a barren, ashy landscape. Recovery has involved many partners and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Almeda Fire was devastating. It destroyed thousands of homes, and many residents still live with lingering trauma. But The fire burned those blackberry thickets to the ground, leaving a blank canvas for the restoration work.
