A close-in view of a spiral galaxy that faces the viewer. Brightly lit spiral arms swing outward through the galaxyβs disk, starting from an elliptical region in its center. Thick strands of dark reddish dust spread across the disk, primarily along the spiral arms. The arms also contain many glowing, pink-red spots where stars form and clumps of bright-blue star clusters. Beyond its spiral arms, the galaxy is a bit fainter and speckled with blue stars.

4 dust shells expand away from 3 central stars that appear as a single pinpoint of light. The innermost shell is smallest, like the size of a thumbprint, and brightest. It is yellow and forms a backward lowercase e. A line at 3 oβclock swoops to the bottom-left in an arc that ends at 8 oβclock. A second line at 9 oβclock dips down to start, but then goes straight up, angling around the top. The 2nd shell, about the size of a fist, is orange and has looser arcs. One appears from 4 to 7 oβclock. A brighter orange triangle appears from 10 to 12 oβclock. Its outer edges overlap, forming a rough circle. The third shell extends almost to the edges and is semi-translucent red, with similar arcs and a darker red line that also forms a faint triangle at top left. The widest shell is faintest and at the edges. A semi-transparent blue appears across the scene. A larger foreground star with spikes is at bottom left, and more distant stars and galaxies are strewn across the black expanse of space.

An oval-shaped spiral galaxy. Only the center and lower half of the galaxy is in frame. Its center is primarily golden in color with a white glowing core, while its thick spiral arms are mostly blue, particularly at the outskirts; these colors merge in between. Dark lanes of dust swirl through the center, blocking some of the galaxyβs light. Stars and distant galaxies are visible around the edges on a black background.

Astronomers from the International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) have created one of the largest low-frequency radio colour images of the Milky Way ever assembled. This spectacular new image captures the Southern Hemisphere view of the Galactic Plane β the disk of our Galaxy, which appears to human eyes as the glowing band of the Milky Way β now revealed across a wide range of radio wavelengths, or βcoloursβ of radio light.
This is what the band of the Milky Way would look like at night if your eyes could see radio waves. A hidden beauty.
It's a new image created by the Murchison Widefield Array, which scanned the sky in 20 radio "colors" over frequencies from 72 to 231 megahertz. π§ͺπ
