Then CEOs can truthfully say that AI (meaning the whole family of computer science) is massively beneficial to society, while letting listeners attribute those benefits only to generative AI.

Maybe I’m wrong and this isn’t a big problem! But it seems like trouble brewing to me.

This confusion ultimately benefits only the people who run generative AI companies, I think. People without strong opinions might hear that basically everyone who’s not in tech or research thinks that AI is *only* generative AI and adopt that (mistaken) view themselves.

Machine learning, or what lots of people call ‘algorithms’, is a branch of AI. In fact, generative AI is a kind of machine learning.

I get that this might seem really academic but it matters, and I think it’s a problem that both people who are pro-generative AI and anti-generative AI don’t get it.

This reaction and the article are why I think the casual use of the term ‘AI’ to mean only generative artificial intelligence is a huge problem.

Probably all of us use AI (by its actual definition) daily, most obviously through machine learning models that curate our social media feeds.

Really don’t understand this trend of reporting on the drama/gossip angle as if it is the news.

I don’t even know what the actual term is for what my parents’ cousins actually are to me.

For a long time, I’ve thought that almost all social media is a net negative for me and incompatible with my brain. Of course, I still use a couple of them because addictive lol.

Now I’m of the opinion that it’s fundamentally a net negative for society and incompatible with human brains.

I could totally be off base but you might possibly also like Jesse Welles (try his Pilgrim album, for something more in the acoustic Americana direction) or Hozier (for something in the alternative direction, try Unreal Unearth Unending).

I tried to read this as an audiobook and was so lost, I DNFed. I don’t remember exactly what confused me, but I do remember that other reviews mentioned the same thing. Maybe I’ll have to try again with a physical book!

I’m not good at making pretty pie crusts, this is probably the best I’ve ever done.

I thought the exact same thing about guns the moment he said it.

It’s not strictly necessary, but is definitely nice. We got it for the dumping, not the notifications.

Ours is a litter box that dumps into a separate waste container after every use so that the litter is always fresh for the cats (one of whom will pee on the tile before using litter with stuff in it 🙄). It notifies me when the waste container is full or the litter needs to be topped off.
