I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time. Every day my phone buzzes. It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again. An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next. Understand what it is to pray in Chicago.

I officially just submitted my first academic paper since my senior year of high school in 2006.

I’m very out of practice and overthinking is at its max but I don’t actually think I did too terribly.

“Not to terribly” is pretty high praise from my brain so I’ll take it.

All because I was looking for a specific thing that was shared months ago for a paper that’s due in a week.

Why is it that when I stick to my status quo, I can reasonably stay level but when I make decisions to better myself, to improve my situation, it never fails to bite me in the ass?

The US has so much economic and military power that it’s not a mistake to view it as akin to Tolkien’s Ring of Power.

And… that has uncomfortable implications.

But seriously - did we think that we could build such a powerful thing, and then not have cruel people try to take it for themselves?

I'm finally getting back to working towards my degree. If/When I finish it'll be "just" an Associates, with the opportunity to take it further later on.

It's honestly a little discouraging that I'm going for it now, given everything.

I haven’t been on Reddit at all this week. Since Saturday when I started realizing that I’ve been in a very not-good place lately.

I applied to a local community college and was accepted. Post-9/11 GI Bill and FASFA is submitted. It might just be an AA but it’s progress. I’ll take it.

I know having just lost a job is a personal problem and not on the scale as *waves hands* everything…it definitely does nothing to help the overwhelming sense of discouragement.

Remember the bill changes the definition of a dependent to a child 7 years or younger. That will throw most parents off low income thresholds for subsidies.

Trans rights are human rights.

It’s a strange feeling to have an integrity crisis against people who literally scammed you out of money and control of your bank account.

I’ve been told that I’m too nice for my own good but I think this takes the cake.
