To address these costs, FAO outlined policy interventions - similar to those described above.
💡 True Cost Accounting is the tool that can illuminate trade offs in designing and implementing these policies, ensuring benefits and costs are fairly distributed.
In their 2024 State of Food and Agriculture report, @fao.org revealed that the hidden costs of our food system amount to $11 trillion.
🚨 A staggering 70% of these costs are from unhealthy diets related to non-communicable diseases.
💰 In 2023, Colombia became the first country in the world to introduce a tax on ultra processed foods.
