Just a dude trying to get his life together. It's 4pm and I'm still struggling with the grappling master known as my blanket. Occasionally, I have thoughts. Once in a blue moon, they're worth listening to. He/Him

I was only ever in the periphery of the chess community, but I've enjoyed my fair share of his chess videos. They were enlightening and entertaining without ever devolving into algorithm clickbait.

From what I could tell, he was a great educator and will be sorely missed.

29 is far too young.

"What trillion-dollar problem is AI trying to solve?"

Wages. They're trying to use it to solve having to pay wages.

I'm in this picture and I don't like it.

Family gatherings as a kid being the youngest one by far was awful.

I'm happy to report that I haven't had an academia-induced nightmare in quite a while.

Took nearly a decade after finishing my masters degree to get to that point.

Still wrestling with mental health, but I'm making progress.

If I’m ever a professor again, I want to give a graduate seminar, topics to include:

- how not to say stupid shit about fields outside your expertise
- what is your expertise, anyway?
- how not to be an insufferable bore
- your PhD doesn’t make you a better person: coping with that

Other ideas?

This is so spot on. As a climate scientist and public intellectual, I see or experience these often

A TNG scene. We're in the Enterprise conference room, where Picard is holding a meeting with Data, Troi, and Dr Crusher. Barclay is also there, for unknown reasons. Maybe he wandered into the meeting and just sat down, and everyone was too polite to mention it. That happened to me once. I was visiting an office location I didn't normally go to and I wasn't quite sure which conference room I was supposed to be in. I walked into one and sat down and it took me five minutes to realize I was in the wrong meeting. From the perspective of the people in that room, halfway through that meeting, a stranger walked in, sat next to the boss, took notes for five minutes, then walked out without saying a word.

At its heart, Star Trek is a utopian fantasy about a society so advanced that they are capable of holding productive meetings that last no longer than three minutes

I've been trying to get into art, but I'm realizing that it is difficult to motivate myself without an active art community.

Maybe the ideal is to not rely on extrinsic factors, but when you wrestle with mental health, sometimes that extrinsic help is necessary. At least, for me, it is.
