What a brilliant two weeks at the #EASP Summer School! Being part of the political cognition workstream was extremely rewarding and thought-provoking. I leave with a bunch of new research ideas, and having met incredible researchers in the process! Thank you to the amazing organisers!
05.08.2025 12:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The association between social identification and system justification, especially amongst low-status groups, is a highly contested issue in the social and political psychology literatures. While some researchers propose that this association should be largely negative, others assume that it should be largely positive. Here, we synthesised the accumulated evidence on this relationship using a 4-level meta-analysis of 84 papers supplying 248 different samples and 359 effect sizes (Ntotal = 395,855). Overall the association between identification and system justification was positive, although weak (Zr = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.17) and was stronger for high- and intermediate-status groups (Zr = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.13, 0.25 and Zr = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.04, 0.20 respectively) but null for low-status groups (Zr = 0.01, 95% CI = β0.04, 0.06). When theoretically relevant moderators were taken into account, the results further revealed that, for low-status groups, subgroup identification was positively correlated with system justification, but only when status differences were stable and/or legitimate.
βNeither theoretical framework consistently accounted for all patterns in our meta-analytic findings. This highlights the need for both SJT and SIMSA to evolveβthrough refinement and integration.β

"The existence of transgender people challenges the notion of gender as an arbitrary social construct. Gender roles may be cultural products, but gender identity itself seems to arise from within.β When people are asked how they identify, the number of transgender persons is relatively high. The latest estimate is that 0.6 percent of adults are transgender, which translates into 1 or 2 million people in the United States alone. But this number is almost certainly an underestimate.*β Transgender persons have every reason to be reluctant to come forward. Remember the bathroom bills that tried to erase them from the public sphere? Currently, similar efforts are under way in relation to sports. Instead of accommodating transgender people and recognizing their rights, American society seems intent on demonizing them and making their lives difficult. The big mistake, which we have faced before with respect to homosexuality, is to present being transgender as a disorder that needs fixing or a choice that needs correcting, as if it were a mere lifestyle preference.
