I guess the other thing to ask ourselves is what would be gained from a very literal version of LotF given that we all know the book inside out from GCSE, so maybe a new interpretation was precisely the point.

That's a good point and fair. There were some great things about it, especially the excellent acting performances.

Very true. I felt a lot of the depth was lost from including the boys' back story, for example. It wasn't about Jack's individual trauma but about the darkness of human nature. But I also think we need a more grown-up conversation about racism. Much of TV pretends it never existed in the first place

Despite the still prevalent belief among far right circles that there's a hierarchy when it comes to the darkness of human nature.
19.02.2026 12:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
By ignoring the context of the original book, much of the deeper understanding of human nature is lost. At the outset, the boys believe being British and upper class will prevent them from descending into savagery. Yet we have many contemporary examples that show the opposite, which is the point.
19.02.2026 12:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
At the time of racial hierarchy, Golding's book flipped the narrative of the time, showing the degradation of man is a human quality, that occurs regardless of Britishness or class, that there is no difference between one and another on the basis of colour or culture.
19.02.2026 12:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Colourblind casting where we pretend racial inequality doesn't or didn't exist, fails to recognise an uncomfortable colonial past, and lets people off the hook, educating nobody.
Rather, the arts have the potential to hold a mirror up to the taboo and give the unheard a voice.

Please ignore Mundo Pixar and all other fake museums which are actually photo opportunities for Instagrammers, rather than entertainment for children. Eye-wateringly expensive too.
I'd recommend the vastly better bang for your buck MathsWorld instead; you can actually touch and play with things?

Aladdin is my favorite Disney animated film. There are at least 4 different home/handheld console versions of Aladdin. All of them offer something unique. First up, here is the one for Sega's 16 bit console (Megadrive/Genesis). Did you play this version? #retrogaming

A white book with a artwork of a blue square. The front cover of The World According to Colour, A Cutural History by James Fox
Love this book; a history of our world told through the meaning we attach to colour, via philosophy, anthropology, culture, religion, technology, fashion and more.
In an increasingly bleached, sterile world, colour is essential for understanding meaning, purpose, and the human condition ๐๐๐๐
