In January 2026, Judge Amit P. Mehta ordered the Department of Energy (DOE) to reinstate seven specific grants worth approximately $27.6 million after finding their termination was unconstitutionally based on political affiliation.

St. Paul, Minnesota EV Expansion: A $560,844 grant for expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure and supporting consumer EV education.

Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Projects: Reinstatement of four awards totaling approximately $535,500.

Elevate Energy Projects: Funding to restore a building performance resource hub designed to improve energy efficiency in buildings.

SolSmart Program: A technical assistance program operated by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council aimed at reducing barriers to solar power adoption.

Methane Monitoring: Initiatives focused on monitoring and addressing emissions of planet-warming methane.
Energy Code Updates: Funding to assist local jurisdictions in updating building energy codes to enhance efficiency.

Community Clean Energy Access: Projects led by the Southeast Community Organization to expand consumer access to clean and affordable energy.

Danish and Greenlandic envoys met with White House national security officials and bipartisan U.S. senators to address concerns over President Trumpโ€™s renewed push to acquire Greenland. The Talks aimed to clarify U.S. intentions and discourage aggressive actions that go beyond existing defense agreements. Greenlandโ€™s representatives firmly reiterated that the island is not for sale and that its future must be decided by its people. U.S. officials. Including Vice President J.D. Vance, emphasized Greenlandโ€™s strategic importance for missile defense and Arctic security, warning Europe to take the issue seriously. Some U.S. senators expressed discomfort with the administrationโ€™s focus on acquiring Greenland. The dispute unfolds amid broader Arctic geopolitical competition, with Denmark, Greenland, and European leaders consistently rejecting any sale or transfer of sovereignty.

U.S. officials in the Trump administration have discussed offering direct lump-sum payments to Greenlandโ€™s residents as part of a plan to persuade the islandโ€™s roughly 57,000 people to secede from and potentially join the United States. Figures under consideration reportedly range from $10,000 to $100,000 per person which could total nearly $6 billion if applied to the whole population. The idea is one of serval being discussed internally, alongside options such as Compact of Free Association or even the use of military force, as part of a roader effort to acquire influence or control over Greenland, a territory seen important. Greenlandโ€™s prime minister and Danish officials have strongly rejected the concept, insisting the island โ€œis not for saleโ€ and that decisions about its future rest with Greenland and Denmark alone. European leaders have echoed that position and rejected any external attempt to determine Greenlandโ€™s status. Polls show most Greenlanders favor independence from Denmark but do not support joining the United States.

Djibouti Ports & Free Zones Authority hosted a signing ceremony at Djibouti International Free Trade Zone for three agreements involving energy, port infrastructure and logistics projects, following a ministerial visit to Doraleh facilities and the free zone, according to Djibouti Ports & Free Zones Authority.

The delegation visited the Doraleh Container Terminal (SGTD), a planned solar park site near the terminal, and the logistics area at PK23 dedicated to the export and processing of Egyptian products.

The first agreement was signed between Elseweddy Electric, an Egyptian solar energy producer, and SGTD for the development of a 23 MW solar power plant with battery storage on a 30-hectare site in Doraleh, intended to supply energy exclusively to SGTD.

The second document, a memorandum of understanding, was concluded between Great Horn Investment Holding and the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport, a state-owned Egyptian entity, for the development of a new container terminal with a capacity of 5 million TEUs and a quay length of 1,450 meters with an -18 m draft.

The third agreement covered a land lease for an initial 10-hectare plot within Djibouti International Free Trade Zone for a logistics zone dedicated to the export and processing of Egyptian products, with the project stated to lead to job creation.

Egyptโ€™s 2025 port agreements with Eritrea and Djibouti are not isolated economic projects but part of a long-standing strategic pattern rooted in 19th-century imperial ambitions, most clearly symbolized by the 1884 Hewett Treaty. In late 2025, Egypt signed deals to develop the Assab port in Eritrea and Doraleh port in Djibouti, including infrastructure suitable for military use and Egyptian naval deployments. While publicly framed as development partnerships, the article interprets these moves as a geopolitical strategy aimed at pressuring and encircling Ethiopia, particularly amid ongoing disputes over regional influence. Egyptโ€™s behavior back to the era of Khedive Ismaโ€™il Pasha, when Egypt sought to dominate the Red Sea coast and penetrate the Ethiopian highlands. This expansionist project included the occupation of Massawa and military incursions into northern Ethiopia, ambitions that ultimately ended in decisive Egyptian defeats at the Battles of Gundet and Gura. Despite these losses, Egypt retained coastal footholds, sustaining long-term tension with Ethiopia. The Hewett Treaty of 1884 was intended to resolve these conflicts by promising Ethiopia free transit through Massawa in exchange for assisting Egyptโ€™s military withdrawal. However, the treatyโ€™s core guarantees were effectively nullified when Italy seized Massawa with British acquiescence, cutting off Ethiopian access to the sea and setting the stage for future confrontations, including the First Italo-Ethiopian War. The article presents this episode as an early example of how imperial maneuvering undermined Ethiopian sovereignty.
