Author of Doc Watson: A Life in Music, now available from the University of North Carolina Press
Recently I've heard from several friends (ranging in age from 30s to 60s) who have struggled to walk on or fallen on ice, with one fracturing a wrist and another breaking an ankle. Ice cleats are a game changer. Mine are strap-on like these from L.L. Bean, but there are plenty of options out there.

A proud moment in my writing career came when I was talking to Aaron Lee Tasjan backstage at the much-missed Garage in Winston-Salem, and he told me Snider had given him a copy of my John Prine biography and told him he should read it.

RIP Todd Snider, scruffy troubadour, masterful yarn spinner, plainspoken songwriter, troubled soul, and self-professed "tree-huggin', love-makin', pro-choicin', gay-weddin', Widespread-diggin' hippie." I'm grateful I got to see him perform two or three times.
