06.08.2025 14:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The theory training in my soc PhD consisted of bitesize chunks of a few 'big names' + garbled conversations about Goffman/DuBois. Talking to grad peers at other schools, the theory attention is superficial + our depts are somewhere between dismissive and hostile towards anything vaguely critical.

Just registered for this year's conferences. It is Wild expecting PhD students to fork out in advance for hotels, flights, membership, and registration and then await reimbursement months later.
It's a bizarrely imposed form of financial hardship just to participate in basic professional events.
Is me sending my dissertating bestie Very Good TikToks an act of care and the provision of relief, or am I sabotaging them and setting up additional barriers to success? Big questions as I hit the 'send' button on the dopamine app.
11.06.2025 15:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Just pre-ordered a copy, I'm writing on immigrant experiences with pregnancy & maternity care in Spain atm and I'm really excited to read this!
10.06.2025 10:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This little owl appeared right outside my window during my advisor meeting and I had to ask for a brief pause to snap it. I hear him at night and this was like a celeb spotting for me. So exciting.
04.06.2025 14:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Excited to be sharing another dissertation paper at the @britsoci.bsky.social Medical Sociology conference this September. Had so much fun last year, it was such a positive + supportive space. Now to actually finish writing it...
02.06.2025 16:45 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Btw, every time you like this post you take a like away from a deserving homegrown πΊπΈAmericanπΊπΈ Bluesky user.
02.06.2025 13:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We've got an international student groupchat where we criticise Ford F150s, US bread/pastries, and the public transport options. We love TA-ing so that we can brainwash our πΊπΈstudentsπΊπΈ into doing a year abroad in the motherland, where they can absorb deviant European values like going home at 4pm.
02.06.2025 13:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As an international student, I LOVE greedily taking up all the opportunities and resources that should have gone to homegrown Americans. Every time I get my stipend cheque I giggle about taking $$$ from deserving USians. Already plotting to fly the Union Jack at commencement to really rub it in.
02.06.2025 13:05 β π 14 π 1 π¬ 1 π 1I moved from the UK/DK for undergrad and MA to the USA for grad school. I've found it confusing/jarring how generous the grading is here + the insincere praise. I was accustomed to teachers/peers giving blunt and honest feedback before, it feels harder knowing what people actually think of work.

30.05.2025 12:00 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Bourdieu moment where he claims that a particular logic is "no doubt [...] as true in Japan as in France" before bracketing "(this remains to be verified)". Everyone should just *assert stuff* in this formula.
"Yeah, this is a universal truth worldwide (I haven't actually checked that yet lol)"
