Just registered for this year's conferences. It is Wild expecting PhD students to fork out in advance for hotels, flights, membership, and registration and then await reimbursement months later.

It's a bizarrely imposed form of financial hardship just to participate in basic professional events.

We've got an international student groupchat where we criticise Ford F150s, US bread/pastries, and the public transport options. We love TA-ing so that we can brainwash our 🇺🇸students🇺🇸 into doing a year abroad in the motherland, where they can absorb deviant European values like going home at 4pm.

As an international student, I LOVE greedily taking up all the opportunities and resources that should have gone to homegrown Americans. Every time I get my stipend cheque I giggle about taking $$$ from deserving USians. Already plotting to fly the Union Jack at commencement to really rub it in.

I moved from the UK/DK for undergrad and MA to the USA for grad school. I've found it confusing/jarring how generous the grading is here + the insincere praise. I was accustomed to teachers/peers giving blunt and honest feedback before, it feels harder knowing what people actually think of work.
