“Why Are We Funding This?” Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

Black ink drawing of a many-legged worm-like animal with charming curly antennae and chunky little legs. Handwritten text reads: Velvet worms (phylum Onychophora, for "carrying claws") walk softly towards their unsuspecting prey on their foot pads. This troglobiotic (care-dwelling) species lacks both eyes and pigment.

This photo that you’re all sharing is wildlife harassment from a serial wildlife harasser. There is absolutely no reason for this person to grab and attempt to ride a free-swimming animal. It doesn’t show that sharks aren’t dangerous, it shows that some humans make bad choices.
