What happened with Polygon today is so fucked. Vox Media has made some atrocious decisions in my six years here but this is really something else. And to do this in the middle of us bargaining a new union contract, where they scold us for asking for better protections, is just unconscionable.

As a huge fan of independent media and worker focused business models. The first team to make a Dropout style business out of the shattered remains of so many good journalists and personalities will be the future.

Polygon was special and deserves better. Giant Bomb is a titan of the new “old days” of games media coverage and will leave a huge hole. The industry changes and good people are kicked out unceremoniously. It’s heartbreaking. I hope everyone will be okay.

All these years later I have watched wonderful and talented people make it, break it, and flourish in games media. Despite everything warning them not to do it, everyone that worked in Games Media was brave for following their heart. Today is a hard day to be a fan.

When I went to college (2005) for journalism, I wanted to write in games media. Even my professors laughed at me. After graduating I was convinced by smarter people that games media would not pay the bills so I took my first “stable” job as a writer at an Ad Agency. I was laid off in 6 months.

It’s the only thing that breaks up the day during unemployment. “At least I went to the gym today”
