Labour are dancing to the tune of Reform's cruel agenda on asylum.

These proposals, including confiscating personal belongings, will punish people who have already endured unimaginable hardship and will create further divisions in our communities.

Plaid Cymru rejects such performative cruelty.

Imagine how far the Β£2.5billion announced for nuclear today could go if it was invested in energy communities.

Such an imaginative lead for heritage in Scotland. I saw similar graphic novel artists used to illustrate the Ad Gefrin Anglo Saxon museum in Northumberland in May. A hugely effective new way to communicate archaeology πŸ‘πŸ‘

One of the government's plans for the NHS is "left shift", taking services from hospitals and placing them in the community. Closer to the residents, more responsive to their needs, cheaper, and faster services.

What's not to like?

This is not as easy as some think. A short thread:

I’m never quite sure what the β€˜woke right’ is, but in my imagination it means someone who includes a land acknowledgement to the local aristocratic landowner in their email signature

Budget driven rather than appeasement driven, since the racists aren't going to distinguish between immigrants with ILR and immigrants without, even though it's being presented as tough on immigration.

This is really appalling, and the only way I can make sense of it is that it's a desperate measure to keep people here and working and contributing longer without giving them recourse to public funds.

Fig. 3. Estimated mitigation potential from forestation varies with land availability assumptions. (A) Global and regional ecosystem carbon sequestration. BA19 (10), GR17 (8), and Qin24 (24) refer to respective assumptions of land potentially available for forestation. The β€œcommitted” assumption considers only national commitments, and β€œachievable” shows currently achievable land limited by availability defined in Qin24 (see materials and methods section M3). (B) The currently achievable mitigation potential varies among countries and income groups. Country-specific data are available in data S3 (24). Country codes and corresponding income groups can be found in table S6.

The achievable carbon uptake from planting trees is much lower than previous estimates, and even lower than many nations have committed to. New paper by Wang et al. in Science. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... πŸ§ͺ🌏🌳🌲🌐

So bizarre to get messages from sheep pharmaceutical suppliers asking me to rate my purchases. Half tempted to go write that the Heptavac vaccine had a lovely strawberry flavour but the blowfly strike protection pour-on gave me a rash.

An additional factor for some tech founders apparent insanity about this is that they hope AGI will solve aging and death for them personally.

A non-anthropomorphized view of LLMs In many discussions where questions of "alignment" or "AI safety" crop up, I am baffled by seriously intelligent people imbuing almost magic...

I wrote a short rant about what irks me when people anthropomorphize LLMs:

We all know each other, we know each other's animals, we help each other out. I think some of you have very incorrect ideas about what rural living is like, or very specific ideas that don't hold globally.

05.07.2025 12:22 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I live in one of the most rural spots in the UK, between two villages that are so small they have about 10 households each. Many of my neighbours are part of extended families that have lived here since before records were made. It's a very strong community.

Your replies are impressively full of people who look at rural America and instead of concluding "genocidal religious fundamentalist settler colonialism is bad" they decide "rural is bad."

Everything implied by what you wrote could be accurate, but there's a lot of propaganda/PR crafting in that phrasing and we should be skeptical and fact check.

Finally, "linked to cattle ranching" is a weasel phrase. Is it driven by cattle ranching, or is it forest clearance as a timber cash grab followed by soybean farming that strips the soil and then cattle put on when it's not good for anything else?

Also, it's ideal to cycle livestock through arable land to graze crop residue and maintain fertility. So it that statistic "used exclusively for livestock"?

04.06.2025 10:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

80% agricultural land used for livestock is a meaningless phrase because it doesn't tell you what percentage of that land is suitable for any other kind of agriculture. What you want to know is % ARABLE land used for livestock.

Government β€˜failing to support natural regeneration of trees in England’ Campaigners say targets for woodland creation are unlikely to be met because 95% of grants are for planting

I'm seeing a lot of irate reactions to this story but forest restoration is much more complex and unpredictable than this implies. Just because you leave land vacant doesn't mean that trees will suddenly appear, nor the trees that you would like.

This meeting condemns the Supreme Court ruling defining the term 'woman' with respect to the Equality Act as being based on 'biological sex', which they refer to as a person who 'was at birth of the female sex', as reductive, trans and intersex-exclusionary and biologically nonsensical. We recognize as doctors that sex and gender are complex and multifaceted aspects of the human condition and attempting to impose a rigid binary has no basis in science or medicine while being actively harmful to transgender and gender diverse people. As such this meeting:

i. Reiterates the BMA's position on affirming the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals to live their lives with dignity, having their identity respected.

ii. Reminds the Supreme Court of the existence of intersex people and reaffirms their right to exist in the gender identity that matches their sense of self, regardless of whether this matches any identity assigned to them at birth.

Condemns scientifically illiterate rulings from the Supreme Court, made without consulting relevant experts and stakeholders, that will cause real-world harm to the trans, non-binary and intersex communities in this country.

iv. Commits to strive for better access to necessary health services for trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people.

Explosive response of the British Medical Association to the Supreme Court's "biologically nonsensical" ruling: "We recognize as doctors that sex and gender are complex and multifaceted aspects of the human condition and attempting to impose a rigid binary has no basis in science or medicine".
