This is going to be the new reality for thousands of cyclists, thanks to Mayor Adams. He severed a key part of a growing network of safe roots — documented as safe by his own DOT — to create unsafe conditions that will lead to crashes and lawsuits against the city.

So we can’t park cars elsewhere when it’s the City trying to create bus boarding zones that keep kids visible.

But ripping up a bike lane that has improved safety for everyone on the block? Absolutely.

DOT Researchers Suggested a Way to Make Big Trucks Safer. After Meeting With Lobbyists, Agency Officials Rejected the Idea. The Department of Transportation allowed trucking lobbyists to review an unpublished report recommending a safety device that could save lives by preventing pedestrians and cyclists from getting crush...

One of the factors in Robyn's death was the lack of sideguards on commercial trucks.

The original truck sideguard patent was issued July 24th, 1896 (that is not a typo). Most other countries require truck sideguards and have so for a decade or more.

I was interviewed about this by ProPublica.

"I may be be an outlier on my final opinion, but indulge a guy who has logged nearly 10,000 hours biking daily in the five boroughs since the early 70s and who led [Trans Alt] when cycling advocacy lay completely beyond the fringe," writes Charlie Komanoff.

Sure this *looks* good but by not narrowing the roadway, DOT allows drivers to continue reckless speeding. AND taking space from pedestrians is egregious, especially as the population of the area grows. Build for the great city you want, not for the failed city you have, @chrislhayes.bsky.social.

Kei trucks are smaller, but they pack as much punch as a bigger pickup truck — while obviously being far safer on the roads — in the same way cargo bikes are also reducing the number of heavy, dangerous trucks on New York City's traffic-clogged streets.
