Good news friends and fictional folk! Production has wrapped on the audiobook version of my latest novel, In The Pale Moonlight. It has now been sent out for distribution and, with any luck, should be available for your listening pleasure before spooky season is over.

Captains - The strongest and most highly respected of Exorcists, Captains oversee and coordinate entire jurisdictions. Rarely do Captains go into the field themselves, but do not be fooled. If a Captain summons their scythe and enters the fray, no demon is leaving in one piece.

Commanders - Possessing not just talent but experience and specialized training, Commanders are trusted to lead squads of Lieutenants on a hunt and even sometimes to hunt down certain demons on their own as lone operatives.

As with other branches, Exorcists are divided into three ranks:

Lieutenants - The lowest rank of Exorcists. Due to only being talented recruits, Lieutenants are grouped into squads which compliment and cover each reaper's strengths and weaknesses. Each squad of Lieutenants is led by a Commander.

This choosing can only be done by a current or former Exorcist as only they can know whether a reaper would be qualified or not. For while most demons are rounded up shortly after dying, many powerful ones escape. Exorcists are tasked with finding these dangerous demons and bringing them to justice.

While all grim reapers are trained to fight demons and are likely to encounter at least a few during their time in their chosen position, only the Exorcist branch is dedicated to hunting them down.

Unlike other branches, a reaper cannot choose to join the Exorcists. They must be chosen.

Judges - At the top of the Purgatory Patrol's various sub-branches stand the Judges. These high ranking reapers are often loan operatives investigating dangerous cases, ruling over the highest levels of legal proceedings, and executing complex special operations.

Captains - While Responders may be the first to go to a crisis, it is Captains who make sure they act accordingly. Captains are team leaders, ensuring protocols are followed, split second decisions are made with a cool head, and that members of the Purgatory Patrol get to where they are needed.

Responders - The lowest rank within the various sub-branches of the Purgatory Patrol and also the most public facing. Whether it be related to crime or natural disasters, Responders are on the frontline of dealing with any emergency in the realm of Purgatory.

Due to their wide variety of roles in caring for citizens of Purgatory, this branch has the largest number of positions a new reaper might fill including Law Enforcement, Dispatch, and Rescue. For the purposes of easy memorization, the ranks within these positions can be roughly divided as follows:

While many know reapers for their role as Psychopomps, it isn't only the newly dead which they watch over. While souls in Erebus are watched by the Furies, most humans end up waiting in Purgatory for their chance to go to Heaven. It is these souls which the Purgatory Patrol have jurisdiction over.

Crypt Keepers - Organizing a branch with members stationed in every realm is no easy task, which is why Crypt Keepers are the highest ranking Charons. They organize every reaper's shift and patrol. They archive every realm transfer. And they coordinate flow of troops between realms during war.

Wake Wardens - Prior to the creation of the RWW, communication across realms was tricky. This is where the Wake Wardens step in. If vital intel needs to reach a reaper, a Wake Warden is sent to deliver it. If secret files need to be sent across realms, a Wake Wardens is entrusted with the journey.

Grave Guardians - The most common and lowest rank of Charon, Grave Guardians are the front desk receptionists in charge of counting spirits that pass through their tunnels. They make sure those spirits have all the right paperwork for a realm transfer and that all necessary tolls are paid.

Indeed, in recorded history, only seven demons have ever managed to get past the Charons' defenses, with the most recent being the King of Blades fifty years ago.

The three ranks of this branch are as follows:

Founded by the god of the same name, Charons defend all known tunnels as well as all travel between the realms. They are the border patrol of the afterlife and while their sedentary duty has gained a reputation for laziness, Charons take their role as defenders of the realms very seriously.
