11. Lastly, don't feel bad because you can "only" offer us $5 or a sack of groceries or an hour of your time to sort and shelve donations. It reminds us -- and YOU -- that we are not alone, we're all in this together, and people actually DO care about those in need. That's not a small thing!

10. Did you buy a large package of something from Costco or Sam's that you didn't like? We'll accept any unopened portion of it, but other pantries might not. so again, call before you donate!

9. What that meat NEVER is: boneless skinless chicken breast or ground beef, the two most sought-after meats among our clientele. Those are good donations!

8. Likewise, while we can and do order frozen meat from the food banks, we typically don't know what we're getting until it's delivered. Sometimes it's stuff that didn't sell after major holidays, sometimes it's great big food service packs that have to be broken down, etc.

7. The dirty secret of large food banks is that not all the food they distribute is nutritious. Canned fruits and vegetables are far less common than you might imagine, so they are always welcome donations.

6. Every pantry is different but ours *will* accept nonperishable food that is past its date, so long as the package is intact. But again, call before your take. At a time when we expect record usage, we don't want to sort out the dented cans of wax beans from the Bush administration.

5. Most food pantries are bare-bones operations (see #3) so your labor might be just as useful as your donation. Our local community services organization has laid off all but two people until the shutdown is over and the two left working are overworked. Consider offering your time too.

4. Ramen noodles are nutritionally deficient and high in sodium. But they *are* better than nothing. Just be aware that we get a lot of them.

3. But before you take anything to your local pantry, call them to ask what they might need most and, importantly, to make sure that someone is actually going to be there to accept your donation. Don't just leave your donation outside, please.
