the reason art with ai at the creative helm will never get traction in any long term or meaningful trot is because art is more than what is in the text of the book, or notes of the song, or runtime of the movie. art is whats OUTSIDE of the medium, a performance piece between creator and experiencer

Use the term “touch grass” to indicate that someone needs to seek out reality, use the term “touch moss” to indicate that they need to seek out ancient forest magic beyond their mortal comprehension.

I won a hugo? I didn’t get a chance to record an acceptance, whoops! So here’s that: I want to thank everyone who’s shown me support over the years (too many to name!) and especially the authors whose work has inspired me. I’ve been making book fanart for over a decade of many of my favourite books, and I’m so grateful that I can continue to do so much Art For Fun as well as professionally!

It’s getting harder and harder to be an artist online these days, with so many websites deteriorating and the rise generative “ai”. Aside from how deeply unethical it is in so many ways, it’s especially sad to see it being used to make so called “fan art” in some spaces - completely removing the point and joy of creating something purely out of love! So thank you to everyone who appreciates and supports all the art I and so many other artists make for free! I want to end by reiterating what many other winners said in their speeches: please do whatever you can to fight for the end to the genocide and occupation of Gaza, and for freedom and liberation for Palestinians.
