I am so bad at bluesky, hopefully third time I repost this correctly. My story "Opening the Attic" is free for everyone today! Based a little on depression, and a little on my aunt actually playing in the unfinished attic and always talking fondly about it. Hope you enjoy!

Exciting news! "Passenger of the Weyward" has been accepted by @crepuscularmag.bsky.social! A little story about Weyward Stations (no cat-trains, sadly, but magical nonetheless) β˜• πŸ‘œπŸŽŸοΈπŸš‰

Just got an acceptance from @crepuscularmag.bsky.social ! Very happy this strange little piece found a home. :)

Great thread on writing micro-fiction with several points that apply to all fiction.

For example: having a unique take on something isn't the same as just having a "gotcha" moment at the end. You'd be surprised how many stories rely on a "gotcha" moment.

03.08.2025 13:09 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Gotcha stories are particularly disappointing when the last line, clearly intended to be an AHA moment, falls flat. So if your story relies on this, make sure it’s potent!

03.08.2025 12:09 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

We also see a lot of "gotcha" stories, where the last sentence reframes the piece or acts as a surprise. These can work, but it needs to be 'surprising but inevitable' - not just a surprise.

03.08.2025 12:08 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Inversely, for us, a neat idea isn't sufficient. There needs to be a story, an arc, some kind of change. Vignettes aren't usually going to be enough for us.

03.08.2025 12:08 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Microfiction isn't a vehicle for summarizing what should have been a longer story. If you're doing a lot of summary, or struggling to fit it all in, maybe that's not the length for your piece!
