What I don't get is when did it becomes accepted wisdom that making jokes was a security risk..? What is the actual logic? Are hijackers likely to make jokes? Or is it so when the baddies get caught talking about bombs they can't just say "no, no, ha ha, only jokes"? Doesn't make any sense.

Well it's a great proxy, and well used when you compare it over time but when you compare with counts of people in various relations to the state it's kinda more apples vs oranges.. that said maybe it cancels it out.

They've kinda been specialising in it.. it's smart of them to recognise what makes them unique and valuable. Yup exactly. You said "there are no downsides" but not true, in our case at least the fall in house prices kinda fucked us.

If we wanted to stay put we'd be fine. But we need to sell up and buy separately. Already tricky in terms of deposit splitting but it worked a year ago - just. Not any more.

I tried to explain the math. It may seem like an in the weeds thing to talk about 'equity' but when you are trying to buy an equivalent house and you can't get the mortgage any more it's very real.

Those numbers are made up but the situation is real for me and my ex right now.

Our equity, built up over a long time of mortgage payments takes a hit much bigger than the % fall in price.

Big picture - good for society but it does cause pain to real people even those just living in their house.

To keep the math simple lets say you bought for $1m with a $200k mortgage. LVR ratio = 800k/1m = 80%

Now, if the price goes down by 10%. House worth $900k. LVR = 800/900 = 89%. You can't trade 'sideways' for a $900k house. Your 20% deposit is gone. Price fell by 10% but your equity fell by 50%.

As a home owner I am all for falling house prices, honestly. Because I realise it's not about me but this dreadful affordability crisis. That said buying and selling in the same market doesn't negate the effect of falling house prices. Because of leverage. Namely your LVR goes up way faster... 🧵

We can't blame National/Act etc for this either.. this ideology / approach goes all the way back to the nineties. Someone needs to do a proper study to see if any aspect of it actually 'worked'.. far as I can tell it's been disastrous at every turn.

What's hilarious (not) is the huge amount of effort that went into slicing up the electricity market into a thousand pieces in the name of competition and market forces and the end result is (a) inefficient extra bureaucracy and (b) still higher prices than when it was a single government entity.

I make different types of AI for a living and no I think it would be fair to say that AlphaFold was not generative in the sense you mean it.. it was not powered by stolen data nor is it like a computer cosplaying as if it was actually an intelligent device while fully not actually being that yet
