Instead of a door, the entrance of the temple is a collection of chimes that hang over the doorway. There’s something off about the color. I tilt my head and study it. Most chimes are neutral colored: metallics, woods, the creamy whites of bones. But there are random black markings. They don’t swirl like how the puffs of winds are usually depicted. They’re almost geometric—a serious of slashes and lines. The shaman swipes them, releasing a cacophony of tolls, each note different from the last. He gestures for me to enter, his smile widening more than before. I frown. All the lines have disappeared, but I shake it off and follow the shaman.

Beginnings! Especially in fantasy/sci-fi there is so much to juggle: establishing the world, the characters, the magic system/technology, the culture, the religion, etc. Oh, and you have to have the character's initial goal on the first page. AND you have to make it interesting.

I’ll probably measure in hours spent for this month and then word count next month. I’m trying to be easier on myself while I work out some things but next month I’ll be ON it. I need the writer’s high of drafting and having to finish the scene.

YA Fantasy.

The last project I did was adult fantasy, but I’ve always had a soft spot for YA. It can have serious themes, but it feels more open to being fun. Plus a lot of the books that I grew up on were YA.

No but seriously it’s strange how we don’t intend of certain tropes in our writing but it comes out. I have a secret sibling in every story that I have never planned.

There are two:
1. Happy to connect with others going through the same process—writing can be lonely.

2. Having some accountability. I am much more productive when I’m on a schedule. Even if I don’t like everything I force out, it eventually leads me in the right direction.

I’m Emi and I’m writing YA fantasy.

NGL my writing week has been rough. I did get a chapter done and hoping to get another tonight but we’ll see. Hoping to make it up this weekend too. I’ve been in a funk and trying to break out of it.

I've been editing and editing for the last 9 months and just started querying. I need to get my mind onto another project, and I have been wanting to do YA and something inspired by Joan-Of-Arc.

Also, I was inspired by summer travel to Korea and Japan for the geography.

I am not a fan of horror, but I love creepy things. Ghost stories, ghost tours, strange taboos, etc.

As for my characters, two of them appreciate creepy things because they love the thrill. One of them hates anything that differs from the norm.

The desert society has been abandoned ever since the seam fell and the spirits took over. Instead, there are unique animal spirits that thrive in the desert: foxes, scorpions, jerboas, and rattlesnakes.

None dares to go to the desert of Shifting Sands in fear of the spirits.
