A polished wooden box with a drawer split in two. One side is labelled "YES", the other "NO". A handful of lighter wooden balls are spread between the boxes, with some spilling out in front. Above the drawer is a hollow cylindrical protrusion that looks almost like a camera lens.

The Society's ballot box has played a crucial role in many important #decisions since our foundation, most notably in 1903 for the vote to allow women to become Fellows. With a majority of 54 votes to 17, the admission of female Fellows was finally granted.

Sadly this rhino is not being ridden by a Gladiator, but this 17th Century illustration by Edward Topsell is still worth a visit nonetheless!

See it up close in our *free* exhibition Still Life: Depicting Nature from woodblocks to X-Rays.

Hello new followers! Rounding off our first week with a very apt Menelaus blue morpho butterfly by Maria Sibylla Merian.

Merian revolutionised zoology by understanding how animals metamorphose, emerging as a new form.

Sapiens? | Hunter Dukes The origins and obsolescence of an epithet

Blown away by this essay on Linnaeus and his life's undertaking to name all species, especially Homo sapiens. Splendid blend of taxonomy, philosophy, linguistics and theology. I will come back to it again. @linneansociety.bsky.social @hunterdukes.bsky.social

Join us for an evening opening of the exhibition and a display of the history of our building, to mark 150 years since the Society moved to Burlington House.

Relax with a drink in our beautiful library, which has been called a 'hidden gem' by many a visitor.

Iโ€™m also currently president of @linneansociety.bsky.social, the worldโ€™s oldest active biological society, where Darwin & Wallace first presented the theory of evolution by natural selection in 1858. We have been in Burlington House for 150 years and last week secured our home for another 999 years!

We had a wonderful time at this year's Green Careers Conference, with thanks to @britishecolsoc.bsky.social for being such fantastic collaborators. It was great to see so many young people keenly engaged with the world around them and passionate about careers in #environmental sectors.

There are few remaining extant woodblocks from the early modern period. The #Woodblocks from Rudbeck's Campi Elyisii survived a terrible fire which destroyed most copies of the book they were meant to illustrate. You can come and see them on display in our #StillLife exhibition.
