This was a really tricky one!

What species would you say fits the theme of 'incomplete'? We ended up deciding that everyone should just pivot to ants 🐜πŸ§ͺ

A vibrant Caribbean Reef Octopus sculpture, leaning on a subtle black base.

"Aurora" is a hand sculpted, highly detailed octopus sculpture made from clay and painted with acrylics.

She is textured in appearance, with intricate bluish green paint work, overlaid with a dark maroon webbed pattern.

Each of the octopus's arms are fully detailed with two neat rows of carefully sculpted suckers.

It's about time I announced a project that I've been working on in the last year... I wrote a book!

'Volcanoes: 10 things you should know' published by @orionbooks.bsky.social Seven Dials will be out in September. It's available to pre-order now. Links: linktr.ee/volcanologist

Fermented fruits: scrumping, sharing, and the origin of feasting Abstract. Mounting evidence points to the importance of fermented fruits in the diets of tropical frugivores, especially African apes. But how has this fun

How do (non-human!) primates get their booze? @nakedprimate.bsky.social draws on the medieval word "scrumping" to describe their consumption of fallen fruit.

History, linguistics and animal behaviour come together in this great piece on tipsy apes and monkeys:

I just don't understand why you would need to use it in this context! If you have just written an entire article on this topic, banging out an extra four sentences summarising it is not going to take you very long!

1. It's cool that there are so many new things still to discover about our world (especially insects!)
2. DNA sequencers are all very well, but sometimes you have to break out the real high tech: "The insect was so high up that they had to use a long stick to get it down."

I only really use it for podcasts so I listen to the ads embedded in those, whereas on youtube I listen to a lot of soundtracks and the ads between each track have now just got entirely out of control

the irony of youtube forcing me to watch more ads is that I'm getting closer and closer to paying for spotify

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

Close up of forefoot and sign with header: the case of the missing toes

This male mastodon cast at the U of Michigan preserves a cool taphonomic detail: missing toes on the right forefoot.

The mastodon was butchered by humans and stashed in an icy pond. Those people probably cut the toes off while removing the skin and foot pads and didn’t bother to retrieve them.

releases shouldnt be done glibly! but also if you're going to require fairly stringent criteria (which you know, isnt necessarily a bad thing) maybe dont then open applications to anyone/individuals and maybe manage expectations better?
