Josiah Henson. Born into slavery, escaped and founded the Dawn Institute in Canada, which taught escaped slaves a trade to help them earn a living. The book, โ€œUncle Tomโ€™s Cabinโ€ Is partly based on Henson.

Lewis Hayden. Escaped slavery with his second wife to avoid having her taken away from her. Settled in Detroit to support the Underground Railroadโ€™s efforts. Spoke out against slavery in Massachusettsโ€™s and eventually becoming a representative in the general court.
