Miles Davis. I have always appreciated Davis’s work since high school and was the first jazz album I would listen to this year. Enjoy this album from Davis released in 1968.

Josiah Henson. Born into slavery, escaped and founded the Dawn Institute in Canada, which taught escaped slaves a trade to help them earn a living. The book, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” Is partly based on Henson.

Lewis Hayden. Escaped slavery with his second wife to avoid having her taken away from her. Settled in Detroit to support the Underground Railroad’s efforts. Spoke out against slavery in Massachusetts’s and eventually becoming a representative in the general court.

Leonard Grimes. He hired out horse and carriages to help slave escape. After spending time in jail, he started Fugitive Church in Boston to continue supporting slaves escaping up to Canada.

Henry Highland Garnet. Born into slavery, found freedom through the underground railroad. He is famously known for his speech in 1843, encouraging slaves to rebel against their owners. Thus painting a target on Garnet’s back.

Luis Gama. Journalist, lawyer, and poet. Sold into slavery by his father, he regained it through the courts. Became a lawyer to take on court cases freeing other slaves!
