A virus-infected tomato plant is induced to produce a volatile that attracts whiteflies that are not carrying the virus (nonviruliferous). When the whitefly carries the virus, its sense of smell is affected, so it is no longer attracted to the virus-infected plants. Instead, it finds healthy tomato plants, and passes the infection on to them.
