This also is important for when you see other people stumble. When you take someone to task for their evils, are you interested in seeing them atone and grow and make amends? Or do you want to see them suffer, for sinners MUST suffer? Is it about justice for victims or punishment for victimizers

People who mean well and are utterly sincere in their desire to help are still capable of horrific evils. When I was in the church, I was conditioned to believe that harassing strangers was a kindness and I *must* do this no matter how much they resisted, otherwise they were damned. That was evil

I grew up in a bigoted environment. There are bigoted ideas I internalized at a young age and when I left the church, I realized that those bigoted ideas were included in the things I needed to excise. Atonement and growing as a person is an action you must perform.

If you grew up in the US, you are almost undoubtedly culturally Christian, in the sense you've internalized some of Christianity's specific viewpoints. A common example of this is the 'but I said I'm sorry, you can't be mad at me' response to being called out for being racist/queerphobic/etc
