Yeah alright Basil Spence was cooking with this one.

Current project is to replace the brains of that big PDU. It needed a recap, but once I did that the main controller stopped talking to the relay boards reliably :<

Anyway here's my code talking to it instead. Satisfying clicks and clunks :3

Anyway we make it though the self test we got stuck on before, and get the BOP 🎢 test done too.

There's no "hooray self test passed!!!" screen unfortunately. You'll just have to trust me when I say it passed ^_^

I'll put the case back together in the morning 😴

Oscillator setup is a bit janky. They've got load caps slung on the bottom of the board.

The crystal collection I bought from Maplin as a teenager let me down, no 1.842 MHz.

We can steal the healthy clock from the good oscillator with a bodge wire for now

B side oscillator has its crystal sat next to the leaky battery.

Popped it off, the crystal has corrosion on it.

Looks like the hermetic seal is compromised, which will kill the crystal.

Checked the oscillators on the baud rate generators - A side is 1.8 MHz as it should be. B side is 5.2 MHz. Chippy is going way faster than its 28 little legs can carry it 🫨

Excerpt from the Fakerscope manual explaining some of the available clock configurations

NOTE: For SYNC mode operation this option should NOT normally be used. If this option is selected for SYNC operation a restricted number of Baud Rates is available. These are: 19200, 9600, 4800, 2400, 1800, 1200. A value of less than 1200 will result in a baud rate of 1200.

EXTERNAL - Disables the internal baud rate generator and allows the timing for transmit and receive data to be taken from an external source, i.e. a modem via pins 15 and 17 respectively.

SOURCE - Enables the internal baud rate generator to provide the timing for transmit and receive but in addition outputs the same clock onto pins 15 and 17 (TXC and RXC) such that some external device may be clocked by the same timing reference as the Fakerscope.

Turns out the clock can come from either an external input β€½, or from one of the 65C51 UARTs, used as a baud generator.

News to me, but modems sometimes provide external clocks. I guess that makes sense if the line has lots of jitter?

Probed round the UART again. The receive clock is there, but it's 1.2 kHz. Should be 154 kHz (16x baud)

Something isn't sitting right about the UART being bad...
Datasheet says it can pull 1.25 W which is enough to be warm.
