Now, imagine that this is happening to talented clinicians and researchers all across the country right now. Time wasted, patients left in a lurch.

If there’s no chance of this grant being funded, this means I’ve dedicated countless hours to a project that has no chance of ever helping anyone. Meanwhile, I could have dedicated that time to seeing more patients or helping our community in other ways.

I can’t tell you how destabilizing this is. Writing grants is a months-long process. I’m working on one now that I started two months ago and had planned to submit in June. It’s a grant that would have helped teens struggling with addiction and their family members to get higher quality treatment.

And: NIH staff have been instructed not to communicate this fact to those universities, leaving researchers totally in the dark.

Since I’m a Harvard faculty member, this leaves me wondering if our work will ever be funded.
