Due to a death in my family, I was unable to attend today’s redistricting hearing in Austin.

Instead, I submitted the following written testimony as a resident of Texas’s 18th Congressional district.

Donald Trump and Greg Abbott’s Texas redistricting scheme is a racist power grab.

Governor Greg Abbott isn’t simply playing politics with congressional seats, he’s playing politics with people’s lives.

The communities of Texas’s 18th Congressional district deserve a voice, we deserve representation.

Governor Abbott and the Texas GOP are hurting us.

The Texas GOP is trying to carve up our communities because they know their policies are unpopular with Texans.

Just saw the new congressional map from Texas Republicans. It’s trash, plain and simple.

Greg Abbott is trying to carve up our communities to silence our votes.

We’re not letting that slide. Texans deserve better, and we will fight back.

I recently spoke with seniors at the Northeast Multi-Service Center. Folks had a lot of questions about redistricting and how it impacts our communities.

The message was clear: we have to protect our people by fighting effectively.

Because of Greg Abbott, TX-18 will go nearly a year without a voice in Congress, during hurricane season, no less.

That means no one to fight for FEMA aid or basic services.

And now the GOP wants to redraw maps? We see the play and we will fight back.

Today the people of Texas’s 18th Congressional District made clear: Enough is enough. Republican officials have targeted and attacked our communities nonstop. That ends now.

We will not allow Governor Abbott and President Trump steal our political power away.

Our icons like Barbara Jordan and Sheila Jackson Lee had a history of standing up to bullies and corrupt leaders like Nixon and Trump. They had a history of fighting back. And that legacy will live on.

We will show up & fight back.

Houstonians - we have to show up and make clear we don’t agree with this. The Houston hearing will be this Saturday, July 26th at 11am at the University of Houston Main Campus Student Center.

🚨 Texas Republicans just released information on public hearings for their redistricting power grab of Black & Brown congressional seats. It’s insane.

Republican officials leading a state with 31 million people will only hold three public hearings for Texans to comment. Absurd.

We are ready to fight back.

Donald Trump and Greg Abbott can’t take our district. I live in TX-18. I was raised here and I’m raising my family here. Our communities are will not stand for this. We won’t be silenced. We won’t be handed over to politicians who couldn’t care less about Black and Brown people.
