160 years ago, news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas, freeing the last enslaved people in the United States were freed.

Today, as we celebrate freedom, we also recommit to the work still ahead to building a country that fully respects & protects Black communities.

Young Democrats of America & Minnesota Young DFL Statement on Shootings of MN Leaders “Last night, Minnesota was rocked by the politically-motivated assassinations of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the attempts on the lives of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. Speaker Emerita Hortman was an unapologetic champion for Minnesota. In our state House, she fought every day for reproductive freedom, stronger public schools, LGBTQ+ rights, and a brighter future for everyone that called the North Star State home. She was our DFL leader, colleague, and friend. Her loss will be felt by every Minnesotan. I also join Minnesotans across our state in praying for Senator Hoffman and Yvette’s swift recovery. It’s hard to believe what happened in our state last night, but the murders of Speaker Emerita Hortman and Mr. Hortman’s are clearly a consequence of the violent political extremism that is on the rise across our country. These attacks were more than just random acts of violence—they were strikes at the foundations of our democracy and normalcy, designed to strike fear into the hearts of our leaders, our organizers, and everyone working to make our country a better place. Our leaders must be able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives. Violence is never acceptable—and neither is fomenting a political culture that allows, encourages, or condones it.
