www.wxlog.com/events/may17... - check it out if you'd like to see a bunch of unpublished McCook, NE 2019 tornado photos or read a bunch of words about that chase. I try to make my logs as cozy as possible. And yes I am still this far behind!

Also I am blessed for the privilege so it confounds my emotions.

I woke up at 230 in the morning and got in a flying metal tube all to look at this cloud in North Dakota.

So much 2025 chase material to sort through -- been a really fun season. Here's a small spout near Ragland, NM today.

Render time on my machine is pretty slow, like 10-15 seconds a frame, but then again I just have a 1080GTX GPU.

While it's not magic, I like it best when a photo is 95% there, but you just want some very subtle cleanup of noise or focus. It's also good for denoising gopro photos in low light. This lapse was atrociously out of focus so it really pushed Topaz to the limit and you can see it in the artifacts.

Topaz did its best to save this lapse from the oblivion of a bumped focus ring. Here's the awesome (confusing) genesis of the anticyclonic tornado near South Plains, TX on April 24, 2025. Never seen anything quite like this before.

First one to spot the tornado in this photo wins. THIS IS WHY WE CHASE!!! From east of Roswell, NM yesterday.

So nice to be out on the plains chasing again. I think yesterday was the most successful first-chase-of-the-year we've ever had.

Finally finished compiling all our storm log data from the 2018 season (comically behind, I know). Of the 11 days we chased, we only saw one brief tornado on May 2. Of the 47.1 hours we were in "chase mode" only 174 seconds of those were spent seeing a tornado. That's 0.103%!!!

You are my official way of marking the start and end of chase season. Always excited to see the Rav4 out again - chases are not that far away.

I'm so ready to chase, but I'm not yet ready for the brutal post-bust drive back to ABQ. Gimme that first west-of-I35 setup please!

A weird thing about #nmwx storm chasing is the perpetual proximity to history. On our June 3, 2018 bust, we just so happened to stop for a final look at the departing MCS near the Trinity site. Added here is the mushroom cloud's rough size / location. The juxtaposition of scales blows my mind.

If you ever feel bad about falling behind on projects -- don't. I'm still writing storm logs for chases seven years ago. Case in point: www.wxlog.com/events/may19...

BTW, if anyone has a more nuanced explanation for why storms were so uncooperative and transient on May 19, 2018, I'm all ears!

Totally did that on Rozel day. I cringe now watching my wide timelapses cause I was totally focused on the rope out that I didn't even notice the new Sanford handoff until it was right overhead and a huge inflow gust finally brought me to my senses.

What were your favorites of the year? Any big disappointments or surprises? How was the year in film overall?

My favorite movies of 2024. Maybe a bit weaker year all in all, but there were plenty of movies that made picking a top 5 REALLY hard. Hated to leave out Dune Pt. 2, Furiosa, Anora, Inside Out 2, His Three Daughters, and Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World

The light comes into his face from one side and the darkness comes in from the other...is this a metaphor???

Ok if I was going to start a PNW brewery, THAT would be my default starting point for a logo.

ahhh thanks my bad I interpreted the 3 subgraphs as separate results for lossy temp, pressure, and dews, respectively rather than overall input lossiness with shrinking y axis error. so yea that relative spike at 7 is weird huh?

06.12.2024 00:45 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The x axis labels are suspiciously sequential across the 3 subplots. Does the 3rd subplot really mean we define dews with 7 decimals of precision??
