I think NOLA just captures the spirit of that. And the loss of any of this storied city, home to all of this struggle is hitting me with a fresh wave of grief today

I think about this idea that I first read about in Black Marxism - the idea that liberation isn’t an end goal, but something we cultivate within ourselves, in our souls, even as we understand the endurance of our oppressions

I know this is nothing new, that the impacts that so many frontline communities experience have an intentionality behind them that is rooted in white supremacist, classist ideology, but something about the kind of resistance NOLA has specifically offered feels like it carries a psychic importance.

There are obviously many layers of cruelty to this, but in all of that, I’m trying to pull out what I can only describe as a specific intention from our current regime to accelerate climate-related destruction to one of the last hubs of political resistance in Louisiana and the south.

New Orleans is projected to be largely underwater by 2050, and the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Project (which was already fully funded, permitted, and underway) was intended to be a *major* intervention to that inevitability. This was completely gutted last week.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I think it’s important that we not despair too much in this moment. The fact that they are resorting to such extreme lengths - sending in these weapons and the national guard- is an indication to me that they see our resistance to ICE as a genuine threat. Morale is a front we are fighting on, too.
