Animals are good at knowing what they need to know, which is why your dog slinks to the basement before you know a thunderstorm is coming. They're in tune with the environment. I'm sure some animals have not made it out of these fires, but don't get the idea that they aren't very good at trying.

The real risk is being surrounded. In 1980, eleven junior rangers were working on a proscribed burn -- practising setting a fire to create fire breaks -- when an incompetent supervisor had the fire set in a way that left them with no escape. They all died.

Different kind of fire that moves at a different speed. Usually, fires in the boreal forest don't move very fast. There are exceptions. When I was 19, I was caught in a fire that "crowned" -- got onto the tops of the trees and was pushed by a strong wind. Our crew had to run for our lives.

Forest fires are not permanent destruction of the forest. What is a natural renewal of the forest has become a climate change issue because the fires are bigger. We could talk about Indigenous people living near these fires and breathing more smoke than we are. This must be bad for their health.

Since I've actually been in forest fires and fought them, please let me tell you that Bambi is not a documentary. Animals are very good at getting away. And many forests regenerate, even trees that are scorched. Five years after fighting a fire near White River, I couldn't tell where it happened.

I know someday my lungs will kill me. Today's hell for me. I can cope with it for a while, but not the long term. And I love summer. I endure winter by making summer plans that never seem to happn anymore.

Academia seriously needs to get its shit together if it hopes to win public and political support. This "how many angels could dance on the head of a pin in 16th century Bora Bora?" stuff is material for hobbyists, not for public funding.

Don't tell me things are the same as they used to be.

Countries have done much stupider things. But this was pretty stupid. A real failure of leadership and communication.

I'm talking about the numbers that are added into GDP stats. Please engage with some good faith and common sense.

How do we calculate recessions? How often do politicians and media talk about investment or poverty rates? We are that silly. GDP is the go-to stat for both media and policy makers.

Also changes to GDP are the yardstick for deciding whether we are in or out of recession, and a lot of policy and politics turns on that.

GDP calculations don't measure whether the money spent or the work goes to something harmful.
