This is exactly the point. The USA showed itself collectively to be dangerous to associate with. Wildly unreliable, prone to inappropriate hateful demonstrations and frankly, culturally deeply suspect.

What happened was horrific. It shouldn't happen anywhere. That it happened AGAIN in the USA? Do you not have mirrors?
Well that... That is certainly a thing someone said...

... Partially I want to see the "sword". Mostly I want to see that math.
Blame Canad... Blame a small part of Canada!
Not the same ring to it, but it gives me something new to throw at mates so, yeah, I'll allow it.
Who the hell put this together? There are some serious questions.

Wow. That is just... Wow. What the actual fu... You know what? No. No explanation. Some things are best left unexplained. That is the most gloriously stupid thing I have seen in a while.
If we kill off the whole AUKUS program, we are on the hook for a fortune, just like the French debacle. We will have paid billions and have nothing in the pipeline. We may as well give up permanently on submarine operations at that point.
Consecutive governments have screwed us.
We COULD attempt to extend the life of the Collins Class, but the expectation is that better than half the boats won't survive the process, and won't be affordable.
The only bright point is that the US benefits from offloading old trash, and we get 'training' boats, so we may get the US boats...
It absolutely is a terrible deal for Australia, but it is the only way we have a chance of having anything in the water before our AUKUS boats start arriving in the late 2030's, early 2040's.
We have put ourselves in a shocking position, but there is simply no other option on the table.
Not buying, essentially gifting the US a big chunk of cash to spend because they have had issues sorting out their own production facilities. IF they get back on track, IF they can produce the number of hulls they need, IF they can manage without them, they MAY 'gift us a couple of old boats.
12.06.2025 13:01 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0You aren't paying them for AUKUS. That payment is an entirely separate agreement. A bad one, but not AUKUS. It absolutely blows my mind people still can't get this straight.
AUKUS is a class of submarine to be built by the UK and Australia.
The US is not building AUKUS.
$75k... Not too bad... It could be done!

Coming off DnD5e, this was one of the first books (after Traveller Core Rules) I read. To say it was a step above what I had learned to expect undersells how good some of Mongoose's work is.
But that is really just sitting there with ideas and stuff. You know, it isn't like REAL work like I do... You know, [insert random menial task that does nothing for the greater good]!
