There a whole host of other factors too - individual variability is mentioned as one, for example. Some develop sooner and later than others.

It is so, so important to learn to understand the difference between A Gross Thing That Freaks Me Out, versus A Thing Which Causes Actual Harm In The World

because as long as you can't navigate the difference, your disgust is a lever that can be used to manipulate you

I should add this is just how I handle it. There's no right or wrong way to handle it in such cases in my eyes, this is just what I work with.
