After weeks of chilly weather, today's been the warmest day of the year so far with 14.3°C recorded in Exeter 🌡️

This exceeds the previous highest temperature of 2026; 13.9°C in Westonzoyland, Somerset on 6 February.

Almost 50C warming at 10hpa above the N Pole recently

The spv stratospheric polar vortex much weakened as a result

A shift N in the jet stream means N Europe holds onto very changeable weather in the days ahead..more mobile than of late though and a milder Atlantic based airstream- we've lost the relentless and often chilly E/SE flow now

Meanwhile, S Europe sees relatively higher pressure

Much milder weather incoming now for the coming days.. 🌡📈

It's rained every day since 31st December 2025 at Cardinham, Bodmin, up to 17th February. raising the "wet wave" here to 49 days. Today will be the 50th.

The longest such streak here though is 72 days, set on 27th November 2000.

A significant warming taking place at 10hpa in the stratosphere above the N Pole, accompanied by a significant weakening of the spv stratospheric polar vortex (as captured by the lowering zonal mean zonal wind at 10hpa 60N)...
