Occassional writer (The Discarded, The Thirteenth Month). Collector of imaginary books, library lore, and other miscellany. Sucker for the spurious glamor of certain voids.

Gore Vidal: American prophet The writer understood better than anyone how far the United States was going to fall

A mostly tedious writer but fascinating character. www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2025/1...

Ed Park + NYRB = definitely worth checking out. And you seem to have good taste as well!

Really? Adult content? A link to a wikipedia page "List of dates predicted for apocalyptic events". I think the kids can handle it.

I didn’t really get this when I read it in 2017. Or I wanted a repeat of his first book, which I love. Now … intrigued.

The Institute for Nonprofit News (inn.org) is a great resource for independent news alternatives that meet high standards, including financial transparency. Some 400+ member orgs all across America.

Eliot Weinberger, The Art of the Essay No. 4 β€œExcept for my less than two years at Stony Brook, I’ve never been in any scene or community, ever.”

"I was very unhappy trying to be a poet. I didn’t have the imagination. But when I turned 30 I realized that I could take things that were already in existence and do something with them. It was painting a still life as opposed to being Hieronymus Bosch..." Eliot Weinberger

Curious to hear what you think. The recent review in the NYRB made me think I could probably pass, despite the buzz in some corners.

I was once at a conference at Sundance and Robert Redford accidentally walked into our room. This was probably 10 years ago. He looked both a million years old AND like the most beautiful person I had ever seen. An odd, unexpected combination. The whole room gasped.

What they really want is terrified immigrant laborers with absolutely no rights, who can be deported when they ask for schools or health care. They’ll probably get it.

Anna Kavan’s titles tell a story in themselves: Let Me Alone, A Stranger Still, Who Are You?, I Am Lazarus, Machines in the Head, Asylum Piece, A Scarcity of Love. Not to mention β€œThe Enemy,” β€œAiring a Grievance,” β€œThere Is No End,” β€œThe End in Sight,” and Ice.

Slightly different because it starts dystopian and ends (after lots and lots of horrible stuff) kind of utopian -- Ministry of the Future. A projection of what it will actually take to survive the future. (Hint, a fair amount of eco terrorism that makes flying not worth it).

As a young man, Charles Wright once found himself standing next to Ezra Pound beneath the porticos of Venice. They were both looking at the Basilica di San Marco but hearing different music. Wright thought about saying, β€œI like your poems.” But silence seemed best, and they parted. #inkstains

J.G. Ballard made his break writing by science fiction for magazines like New Worlds. Unlike many peers, however, he insisted the only alien planet is Earth and the final frontier is not outer but inner space. #inkstains
