Really saddened by the passing of Michel Callon. From the scallops of Saint-Brieuc to market interactions, his work revealed multiple hues where I once saw only black and white. I like to think that heโ€™ll be somewhere, assembling the world along with Bruno Latour and Trevor Pinch.

Screenshot of a conversation between Socrates and Phaedrus: โ€˜I cannot help feeling, Phaedrus, that writing is unfortunately like painting; for the creations of the painter have the attitude of life, and yet if you ask them a question they preserve a solemn silence. And the same may be said of speeches. You would imagine that they had intelligence, but if you want to know anything and put a question to one of them, the speaker always gives one unvarying answer. And when they have been once written down they are tumbled about anywhere among those who may or may not understand them, and know not to whom they should reply, to whom not: and, if they are maltreated or abused, they have no parent to protect them; and they cannot protect or defend themselves.

This conversation between Socrates and Phaedrus feels oddly modern.

Ever get that feeling of giving up on AI because it keeps offering the most obvious answers?

This is a really interesting question. Why has the Wellcome publishing platform been embraced by its grantees whereas the ERC version hasn't? Both are based on the F1000 publishing model and cover publishing charges for grantees, so they seem to have quite similar profiles.

I screenshotted this post to discourage clickbait journalism. As @waiterich.bsky.social puts it, these metrics are flawed but interesting when seen as language: not for accuracy, but for how they convey arguments. Numbers strengthen the claim, regardless. Trusting them is sometimes an act of faith.

Have you ever thought of data evidence as music? Sounds (numbers) are as important as silence. Silence gives rhythm, shape, and space to listen. Some parts of the story canโ€™t be captured in data โ€” and thatโ€™s okay. We need the pauses to reflect, to notice change, and to grasp what truly matters.

And now some philanthropic organisations are rushing to use AI to assess funding applications. And this is concerning. It reflects a bias toward scale and hype. We really need to come back to the basis: how this knowledge helps stakeholders? Why is that important. +Privilege quality over quantity.

For me, is about how datasets are built and explored. One can be great at data mining and modelling, but without deep knowledge of what informs the data itselfโ€”especially the contextโ€”it falls short. Automated solutions often disappoint when looking at the inherent flaws of data collection.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Relatively little compared to Europe: just 10.8% of GDP in 2023 (including sickness & disability benefits, pensions, etc.).

Meanwhile, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎFinland spends 25.7% of GDP & ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทFrance 23.8%.

But if we (outsiders) understood the process better, we could help propose even better solutions After all, we all share this manufactured world. beautifully hand-drawn โ€œBumps Chartโ€ from Cambridge University, depicting the results of the May Bumps rowing races from 1919 to 1931. These charts are a tradition in Cambridge rowing, visually representing how college boat crews moved up or down in rank over the years.
โ€ข	Vertical columns = the years (June races, 1919โ€“1931).
โ€ข	Horizontal rows = the crew rankings in each year (1st place at the top, lower ranks at the bottom).
โ€ข	Coloured lines = the journey of each collegeโ€™s boat across the years โ€” they rise when a crew gains positions (by โ€œbumpingโ€ the boat ahead), and fall when they lose ground.
โ€ข	On the far left and right: the crew names at the beginning and end of the timeline.
โ€ข	The note about 1920 shows that a third division was added that year due to an increase in participating teams.
