Jane Goodall was the first woman I saw being a scientist who did fieldwork as a child, and because of that she's always meant a lot to me. She showed this very hope in the quote below. She was a person who believed she could make a difference to the very end, and devoted her life to it.

Beyond test scores: Debating how to measure school quality | Episode 988 of The Education Gadfly Show This week, Fordham’s president emeritus Checker Finn and Laura Hamilton of the Center for Assessment join us for a polite debate on whether school quality should be judged by more than test scores.

The Gadfly tackles what is arguably the most important issue we face in education: how to measure school quality and the use of tests in particular. It's a good conversation.

Important new evidence from the great team at University of Arkansas that the "bench" of potential teachers who already have their teaching credentials & are working in public schools but not yet teaching is a lot shorter than we've found using older data in WA: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

"Expanding access to schoolwide free meals has the potential to address food insecurity among students, decrease stigma, and reduce pressure on local nonprofits."

🍎 Millions of children in the U.S. struggle with food insecurity. In this policy brief, @orgulozturk.bsky.social (@sc.edu) makes the case for expanding the Community Eligibility Provision Program, the largest schoolwide free meals initiative in the U.S.

My book, a labor of love, with 15 years of my own research and the stories of countless women, is out today!! I document why women's time has gotten so squeezed, and then provide actionable, evidence-based strategies on what we can do about it! So many people on here did the research in the book! πŸ™

A few strategies I use:
1. Talk with students about how: 1) AI tends to produce work that is at best mediocre and at worst just wrong, 2) using AI habitually weakens the critical thinking skills that make college valuable, and 3) AI exploits environmental resources and content creators.

We decided to wait instead and submit a revised version with graduation outcomes to the Economics of Education Review. That is the version that is now published. Crazy how much grit this paper about grit has taken!

22.09.2025 14:40 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

We got a revise and resubmit in a second journal,Β but missed the deadline because of COVID! The editor of that journal did not give us an extension of the deadline and wanted us to start the submission from scratch, as we missed the deadline.

We tried to publishΒ a first version of this paper,Β but only lookedΒ at first-yearΒ outcomes and it got rejected by a first journal.

This paper has been a long time coming. We collected surveyΒ data from the University of Arkansas freshmen in the Fall of 2016,Β and we followed theseΒ freshmen to observe graduation outcomes up to the Spring of 2023.
