The two movies the kids in my elementary school were obsessed with hearing about were this one for its nudity and sex, and The Exorcist for its grossness and blasphemy.

This movie’s arrival on cable was about the same time cable hit my hometown. There was a lot of sneaking peeks and reporting back at school.

I was never assigned A Farewell to Arms, but between high school, undergrad, and grad school, I got to read The Sun Also Rises in four classes. That was enough Hemingway for me for a lifetime.

Ethan Frome was my first Wharton - my only Wharton in high school - and I was sort of like “okay.” Then I read The Age of Innocence in college and 💡.

The dentist's office had a plumbing leak, which meant a shop-vac was running loudly and folks were loud-talking over it. So my usual dental anxiety was overlaid with my visceral aversion to sustained noise, and that was a lot of fun.
