University of Oregon announces 60 staff cuts, no layoffs for tenured faculty The cuts did not eliminate any programs and delivered a softer blow than campus unions expected.

Another casualty of the war our govt is waging against itself. Already lost 117 filled positions + 57 open positions, then another 60 to be announced this week. Shaved ad'tl $ by cutting future "grad employees" ie slots for doctoral students to do research/teach

Iโ€™m sorry, is this an open mic night for a suburban high school slam poetry club or a press conference in the oval office?

Itโ€™s a big reason Newsom is an absolute no go for me for president and while Iโ€™m glad heโ€™s doing what heโ€™s doing in CA heโ€™s not a hero and Iโ€™m worried about all the praise heโ€™s getting.

be interested in a conversation about how best to platform trans people and fight for trans rights in the political sphere. Tactfully but without compromising on humanity.

Full disclosure I donโ€™t fully follow your thread and I do listen to PSA, but I do think raising the bar for conversation to โ€œwe can debate how to best politically advance these rightsโ€ and not โ€œshould we care about thisโ€ is a beyond fair bare minimum. I saw a lot of push back on McBride and would

Weโ€™re seeing major setbacks in the US and I think itโ€™s really important to show people what they can do and to figure out the most effective messaging for a general audience and to persuade those in power. Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all approach, but fear can inhibit action.

I think itโ€™s really important to place this into contact that the article is from 2022. We face a very serious threat and many people seem to embrace a โ€œwell weโ€™re screwed anywaysโ€ attitude, which is not productive.

This book changed how I see the world and brought me to tears and is just amazing. @lutimestwo.bsky.social does a remarkable job of guiding the reader through her journey of learning about an important scientist and being open about what she finds (tried to explain without spoiling ๐Ÿซฃ) enjoy!!!!

Oh yeah, 100% anecdotal. I think, unsurprisingly, the biggest thing was that they seemed to have had great mentors when they were studying.

I have felt like I am free to work independently and that their doors are always open which has allowed the consistency of our contact to ebb and flow based on my needs.

Funny observation, all my studies have been in the US and my advisors have been from elsewhere ๐Ÿค”

- are direct with feedback and because weโ€™ve established mutual respect it doesnโ€™t feel personal. I trust that if they give constructive criticism itโ€™s entirely to improve my work

As a current graduate student I can say that I have been extremely lucky with previous and current advisors and Iโ€™ve noticed they:
- set very clear expectations about how much oversight they give
- donโ€™t hover but have high expectations
- respect me as a human

Youโ€™re doing ethical journalism in a time when so many are protecting themselves behind a skewed idea of โ€œneutral unbiasedโ€ reporting and thatโ€™s huge. Thank you.

Scientists warn US will lose a generation of talent because of Trump cuts Political interference and chaotic cuts to staff, programs and grants at the National Science Foundation are producing โ€˜devastating consequencesโ€™

How a tree-hugging protest transformed Indian environmentalism Fifty years ago, a group of women from the villages of the Western Himalayas sparked Chipko, a green movement that remains relevant in the age of climate change.

Interestingly the original 'tree huggers' weren't about intimacy with nature as such

They were rural women defending the forests that supported their livelihoods from loggers, after gov sold their forests to cricket bat manufacturers and lured the men away to a meeting

In 2002, in testimony to Congress urging the United States to go to war in Iraq, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated: โ€œThere is no question whatsoever that Saddam is seekingโ€ฆ nuclear weaponsโ€ฆ. If you take out Saddamโ€™s regime, I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations.โ€

Netanyahu was wrong. Very wrong. The war in Iraq resulted in 4,492 U.S. military deaths, over 32,000 wounded, and a cost of roughly three trillion dollars. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis also died as a result of that tragic war. Netanyahu was wrong regarding the war in Iraq. He is wrong now. We must not get involved in Netanyahuโ€™s war against Iran.
